In standard Rummy, players lay down melds during play — everyone can see each other's progress. In Gin Rummy, you hold everything until the end, creating a tense poker-like atmosphere where you're reading discards to guess what your opponent is building. Gin Rummy is faster (10-20 min per game vs 30+ for Rummy) and more strategic since the hidden-information element is stronger.
