Nertz vs Solitaire: Key Differences Explained

Published: September 8, 2026

The Core Difference: Shared Foundations

In Solitaire, you build your own four foundation piles at your own pace. In Nertz, ALL players share the same foundation piles in the center. This creates a racing dynamic — if you're slow to play your Ace of hearts, an opponent might start the hearts foundation first and build it before you can contribute.

Multiplayer Racing

Solitaire is solo. Nertz is 2-4+ players competing in real time. There are no turns — everyone plays simultaneously, like Speed. The first player to empty their 13-card Nertz pile yells "Nertz!" and ends the round.

Deck Setup

In Solitaire, you use one deck. In Nertz, each player uses their OWN deck (different backs to tell them apart). You deal a 13-card Nertz pile, 4 tableau cards, and hold the rest as stock.

Scoring

Solitaire is win/lose. Nertz has cumulative scoring: +1 point per card you played to foundations, -2 points per card left in your Nertz pile. Play to 100 points.
