Spades Bidding Strategy: How to Bid Accurately Every Time

In Spades, bidding is arguably more important than how you play your cards. Your bid sets your team's target, determines your scoring potential, and signals your hand strength to your partner. Here's how to bid like a pro.

Counting Sure Tricks

A "sure trick" is a card that will almost certainly win a trick. Count these first:
- Each Ace in a side suit: 1 sure trick (nearly guaranteed to win when led)
- High Spades: Ace of Spades = 1 trick. King with one supporting spade = 0.5 tricks. Queen with two supporting spades = 0.5 tricks.
- Guarded Kings: A King with an Ace, or K-Q combination = ~0.5 tricks

Estimating Your Bid

Formula: bid 1 for every sure trick + 0.5 for each half-trick, rounded down. With 3 Aces (3) + Ace of spades (1) + three supporting spades (1) = bid 5. Most hands produce 2-4 tricks. A bid of 1 signals weakness. A bid of 4+ signals a strong hand.

Reading Your Partner's Bid

If your partner bids 1, they're weak — bid conservatively so your combined bid stays achievable. If they bid 3-4, they're strong — you can be slightly more aggressive. Your combined bid should rarely exceed 7 unless both players have exceptional hands.

Common Bidding Mistakes

• Overbidding: Counting borderline cards (guarded Queens) as sure tricks. If you're not 80% confident a card will win, count it as 0.5 or less.
• Ignoring the nil from your partner: If your partner bids nil, your bid is the team's entire contract. Bid extra conservatively — protecting the nil is priority #1.
• Not adjusting for position: The first bidder sees the fewest signals. The last bidder can adjust based on what everyone else bid.
