Gin Rummy rewards players who can quickly form melds while managing deadwood and reading their opponent. These strategies separate good players from great ones.
The knock decision is the most important moment in every hand. Use these deadwood zones:
Don't knock with high deadwood against an opponent who's been drawing heavily from the discard pile — they may be close to gin and your knock gives them a chance to lay off cards.
Prioritize runs over sets. Runs (consecutive same-suit cards like 6-7-8 hearts) are more flexible — one card on either end extends them. Sets (three 7s) are rigid. Middle-value cards (5-8) are the most versatile because they can combine with cards above and below. Discard high unmatched cards (face cards) early before they become deadwood heavies. Discard from the ends of your hand — Aces, 2s, Kings — they're harder to use in melds.
Count deadwood after every draw. High deadwood (20+): draw from stock, discard high cards. Medium (10-15): focus on reducing to knock range. Low (5-9): prepare to knock. Face cards = 10 points, Aces = 1 — an unmatched Ace is the cheapest deadwood card. First to 100 points wins the game.
