Not every Solitaire deal is winnable — an estimated 80% are with perfect play. Smart strategy dramatically increases your win rate on winnable deals. Here are proven techniques.
The single most important rule: every move should be evaluated by whether it reveals a hidden card. More visible cards = more options. A move that doesn't uncover a face-down card should be carefully weighed against one that does.
Empty tableau columns are powerful because only Kings can fill them. Once created, keep the space open as long as possible. Only fill it with a King if doing so reveals multiple hidden cards. Don't waste an empty column on just any King.
Consolidate scattered cards into fewer, deeper columns. A column with 8 properly sequenced cards gives more move options than four columns of 2 cards each.
Keep all four foundations within 2-3 cards of each other. If hearts are at 8, don't push spades past 3 — you'll need those lower spades to free tableau cards. Racing one suit too far ahead can trap you.
Moving an Ace to foundations isn't always the right play. An Ace on the tableau can support a 2 of opposite color, creating space for other moves. Delay Ace placement if keeping it on the board opens up more tableau options.
Draw-1: Every card becomes playable eventually. Play aggressively to reveal hidden cards. You can afford to cycle through the deck frequently.
Draw-3: You only see every third card, so plan ahead. Before drawing, ask "Can I make a tableau move instead?" Track which cards are in each group of three for future passes. Draw-3 is measurably harder — win rates drop from ~50% to ~30%.
Undo isn't just for fixing mistakes — it's a learning tool. Try both paths ("What if I move the red 7 instead of the black 8?"), see which reveals more cards, and commit to the better one. This trains your strategic intuition.
